Default getting started with cows

I have been wanting to get into cattle, haveing a few fall calving cows. I want that becasue it is what I need to work in with I schedule as an ag retailer. I have been very passive about getting started hoping my dad and 2 uncles would help get me started, nothing against them. I also understand things haven't been faveroable in getting started, but it never will be I just have to take the leap. What I am looking for is sugestions in how to aproach my older neighors or some one a few miles away that I don't know as well and ask them about renting pasture or working into there operation.

Smile Have a plan

If you are interested in advancing in the business, and you are looking to expand, put a good plan together first. Put together a cash flow and business plan that will support what you want to do. If you are going to be approaching others to rent and work with, you should have a good idea of what you can afford for rent, breakevens and such before you approach the neighbors. Also, work with some of the local reps from feed stores and livestock businesses. They may know of someone that is looking for someone to work into their farm or operation that is willing to help you out.

I agree with Mike's comment about having a plan. Another way to go about it would be to think about the type of business you want to have, and then find out what what you would need to do to make it work. That's what worked for me..beginning with the end in mind. Sounds weird but it works.

Hey cowguy82,
The advice the others have given is great, make sure you have your plan. Also make sure you are set up legally, depending on your location, make sure you have a registered Premises ID.

My blog has great tips and articles on Cattle Identification, tagging tips, etc. something to look at.

How to Improve Ear Tag Retention

Cheers
